New to Hair Extensions? Here’s What You Should Know Before Your First Install

Share on:

Before choosing hair extensions, decide whether you want extra length, more volume or both. This guide covers the main methods, what to ask at a consultation and the care each set will need.

What can hair extensions change?

Extensions add hair to your existing lengths. The result depends on the shade, texture, amount of hair and placement.

People use them for:

  • Special moments like weddings, holidays or milestone events

  • Extra length or fullness for everyday styling

  • Colour experiments without commitment

For salon-fitted methods, ask a trained extension stylist to assess your hair and recommend suitable weight and placement.

The main extension methods

The right method depends on your hair density, styling goals and the maintenance you can manage:

  • Clip-ins – Temporary pieces you can fit and remove. Remove them before sleeping.

  • Tape-ins – Flat adhesive attachments fitted and removed by a trained stylist, with regular refit appointments.

  • Keratin bonds – Individual strands fitted by a trained stylist. Agree a maintenance and removal schedule at your consultation.

  • Wefts and Miracle Wefts – Rows of hair fitted by a stylist, with the amount and placement chosen for your natural hair.

For shade help, use our colour-match quiz. Your stylist should assess the fitting method separately.

Before Your First Extension Appointment: What to Expect

At your consultation:

  • Choose a certified stylist who specialises in extensions

  • Bring inspirational images to show your desired result

  • Understand your hair type (and what’s achievable)

  • Plan for ongoing maintenance and costs

Ask your stylist how to prepare your hair for installation; preparation can vary by fitting method.

Do Hair Extensions Damage Hair?

Extensions can cause damage if the weight, tension, fitting or removal is unsuitable. Professional fitting and careful aftercare help reduce that risk; they do not remove it completely. Discuss suitability and any scalp discomfort with your stylist.

  • Choose shampoo and conditioner that follow your extension supplier’s care instructions

  • Keep masks, conditioner and oils away from attachment points unless your stylist advises otherwise

  • Brush with a soft bristle or looped extension brush

  • Remove clip-ins before sleeping. For salon-fitted extensions, follow your stylist’s overnight-care advice

Browse Hadrill Hair Care and follow the application directions for your extension method.

How Long Will My Extensions Last?

A refit interval is different from the lifespan of the hair itself. Both depend on the product, application and aftercare:

Extension Type

Longevity

Clip-ins

Reusable lifespan varies with wear and care. Remove before sleeping.

Tape-ins

Regular refits are required; your stylist should set the schedule and assess whether the hair can be reused.

Keratin Bonds

Follow your stylist’s maintenance and removal schedule.

Wefts

Regular move-ups or refits are required; these are not the total lifespan of the hair.

Check the care instructions supplied with your set and keep your maintenance appointments.
