How Long Do Hair Extensions Last? Tape, Weft and Clip-In Lifespans Explained

Share on:

Tape and weft extensions usually need a salon maintenance appointment every 6–8 weeks. That is different from the lifespan of the hair itself: Hadrill's tape and weft product guides give an estimated 9–12 months with the recommended care. How long your set lasts depends on the hair's condition, fitting, washing and styling.

Maintenance appointments and hair lifespan

Method Maintenance Hair lifespan
Tape extensions Usually every 6–8 weeks; follow your stylist's advice Typically 9–12 months with recommended care
Weft extensions Usually every 6–8 weeks; follow your stylist's advice Typically 9–12 months with recommended care
Clip-in extensions Remove after each wear and before sleeping Varies with frequency of wear, washing and styling

These are care estimates, not a guarantee or an extension of the product warranty. Your stylist should assess both your natural hair and the extensions at each appointment before deciding whether to reuse the set.

How long do tape extensions last?

As your natural hair grows, the tape attachments move away from the scalp. A maintenance visit lets your stylist remove the tapes, check the hair and refit them where appropriate. Do not leave them in longer simply because the extension hair still looks good.

  • Follow your fitter's instructions for the first wash after installation.
  • Keep conditioner, masks, oils and styling products away from the tape tabs.
  • Dry the attachment area fully after washing.
  • Arrange maintenance when your stylist recommends it, usually within 6–8 weeks.

The hair may be reused across several fittings if it remains in suitable condition. Hadrill's tape guides give a typical hair lifespan of 9–12 months with the recommended care.

How long do weft extensions last?

Wefts also need regular salon maintenance as your hair grows. Hadrill's weft guides give a typical hair lifespan of 9–12 months with the recommended care; the interval between fittings is usually 6–8 weeks. The fitting method, your natural hair and the condition of the attachments determine the right schedule.

Brush gently from the ends upwards and support the hair near the attachments. Detangle before washing and avoid sleeping with wet or damp extensions. See our Maintenance & Care guide for Hadrill's full care instructions.

How long do clip-in extensions last?

Clip-ins worn occasionally may last longer than a set worn and styled every day, but there is no single lifespan for every wearer. Wash them when they need it, handle the clips gently and let the hair dry fully before storing it.

Remove clip-ins before bed. Keep them in a storage bag and hanger between wears, and check their condition before each use.

A wash routine for extension lengths

Extension hair is no longer connected to a scalp, so it does not receive the same supply of natural oils as your growing hair. Conditioning helps the lengths feel softer and makes tangles easier to manage. It cannot make damaged hair new again.

  1. The Shampoo cleanses oil and product build-up. Work gently around the attachments and rinse thoroughly.
  2. Once or twice a week, apply The Treatment Mask through the mid-lengths and ends after shampooing. Leave for 5–10 minutes, keeping it away from attachments, then rinse.
  3. Finish with The Conditioner through the mid-lengths and ends for 1–2 minutes, then rinse.

The three products are available together as The Trio. Always follow the care requirements for your particular extensions and attachment system.

What can shorten the life of extensions?

Frequent high heat, rough brushing, matting, colouring and delayed maintenance can all affect how a set wears. Use heat protection, follow the product care guide's temperature limit and keep styling tools away from attachments. A product's ingredient name alone does not establish whether a complete formula is suitable for your extensions.

When should I replace my extensions?

Ask your stylist to inspect hair that stays difficult to detangle after appropriate care, has noticeably thinned or has damaged attachments. If a fitting feels painful or pulls on your scalp, contact your stylist promptly rather than waiting for your next scheduled appointment.

Frequently asked questions

Can the same tape or weft hair be reused?

Often, yes, if your stylist finds it in suitable condition. Reusing the hair still requires professional removal, preparation and refitting appropriate to the method.

Will a mask make extensions last longer?

Conditioning can improve softness and manageability, which helps with gentle detangling. It does not guarantee a particular lifespan, repair attachments or replace salon maintenance.

Does protein-free mean every other shampoo damages extensions?

No. Suitability depends on the complete formula and your extension supplier's care requirements. Hadrill Hair Care is formulated without added proteins; follow the recommended care for the hair you wear.
